BMW: EV Battery Test System

Customer Company Overview

BMW is a German multinational company which currently produces automobiles and motorcycles, and also produced aircraft engines until 1945. The company was founded in 1916 and has its headquarters in Munich, Bavaria.

Case Study Information

BMW came to Chroma to build a test system that will allow them to run qualification and verification testing on batteries for their new electric vehicle technologies.

 Solution

Chroma provided a 17020 Regenerative Battery Pack Test System solution for this customer. The main components in the battery tester included a 69200-1 Charge/Discharge Controller, an A691101 DC/AC Bi-Directional Converter, and a 69225-60-4 Regenerative Charge/Discharge Tester 4 Channel Module.  The test system included a PC and Chroma’s Battery Pro software. This system configuration would allow the customer to test 4 channels individually, or in parallel for a higher power output.

Actions Performed

A standard 12V Lead-Acid battery was used to validate functionality of the 17020 system. Battery Pro was utilized to program battery charge and discharge sequences. Each of the 4 channels in the system was tested individually.

Results

After full system hardware validation was conducted by Engineering and the customer was trained on the use of Chroma’s Battery Pro software and all functions of their 17020 system.
