What are the limitations of TEC control?

The major limitations are:

  • Temperature range -55 to +150?. Any temperature below that is hard to achieve and not efficient, and above that can cause damage of TEC modules and malfunctions of platform.
  • Size of DUTs. 500 mm x 500 mm platform area is about the largest we recommended. DUTs with contact area larger than that may not be suitable for TEC temperature control. Smaller DUTs are better for faster and more stable temperature control.
  • Power of DUTs. TEC is basically for small to medium heat loads. Depending on the operating temperature, the maximum heat load can be from 500W down to 20W. Any device generating higher that 500W heat is not recommended for TEC temperature control.
  • Surface of contact. It is better that DUTs have a flat surface for thermal contact. DUTs without flat surfaces can have poor heat conduction unless some special tooling or fixture is created for matching DUT shapes to the TEC Platform or Thermal Chuck.
  • Material of DUTs. It is better to DUT made of high thermal conducting material, such as metal, ceramic, glass, etc. Plastics, gels, and some soft insulating material are no good for thermal conducting and can cause poor temperature control results.
