HVDC AI Server Power Testing: Chroma DC Load Enables 1.44MW-Level Verification

Rapid advances in AI computing, big data analytics, and cloud technologies are pushing the limits of the power systems that support them. NVIDIA’s new GB300 supercomputing module delivers 1.5× the performance of the GB200, with power consumption increasing from 1,200W to 1,400W. The NVL72 system rack, built from a stack of GB300 modules, houses 72 GPUs and 36 CPUs, drawing roughly 120–130kW. When multiple racks are deployed, the total system power can reach megawatt levels. These systems use liquid cooling to achieve high-density and high-performance output.

This evolution is driving a shift in AI server power architectures from traditional 12V to 48V, 54V, ±400V, and even 800V high-voltage designs. Compared with 12V architectures, which suffer increased resistive losses (I2R) and lower efficiency due to the larger current required to deliver power, high-voltage systems effectively reduce power loss and improve overall energy efficiency. As a result, high-voltage has become the mainstream direction for AI server power systems.

From a testing perspective, whether it’s a power supply unit (PSU) rated at tens of kilowatts, a power shelf at hundreds of kilowatts, or a power rack reaching megawatt levels, all must meet stringent transient response and current slew rate requirements. To meet these testing demands, the Chroma 63200A DC Electronic Load series offers single-unit power ratings from 2kW to 24kW, and supports synchronous dynamic operation of up to 60 units for a maximum rated power of 1.44MW.
